FALL RIVER, Mass. — A tragic fire at an assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, claimed the lives of nine residents and left dozens more injured early Monday morning, according to state and local officials.
The blaze erupted shortly before 3:00 a.m. at the Riverview Senior Residence on North Main Street. Firefighters responded within minutes, but the rapidly spreading flames and heavy smoke complicated rescue operations.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Authorities confirmed that nine residents died as a result of the fire, with at least 32 others hospitalized for smoke inhalation, burns, or other injuries. Several victims remain in critical condition at area hospitals, including Charlton Memorial Hospital and St. Anne’s Hospital.
“This is a devastating day for Fall River,” said Fall River Fire Chief Michael Silva during a morning press conference. “Our crews worked heroically to rescue as many residents as possible, but the speed of the fire presented significant challenges.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office, in conjunction with local authorities and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has launched a full investigation into the cause of the blaze. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in a communal lounge area on the facility’s second floor, but officials have not yet identified an official cause.
The 110-bed Riverview Senior Residence was home to elderly individuals, many of whom had limited mobility, complicating evacuation efforts. Firefighters reportedly rescued more than 40 residents, some using ladders to reach those trapped on upper floors.
Community and State Response
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed condolences to the families affected and pledged state resources to assist with the aftermath. The Red Cross has established a temporary shelter at a nearby community center for displaced residents and their families.
- All residents have been accounted for, according to facility management.
- Counseling services are being provided for survivors and staff.
- Families seeking information are urged to call the city’s emergency hotline.
The incident marks one of the deadliest fires at a senior living facility in Massachusetts in over two decades. Authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation continues.
