July 12, 2025 – Texas Hill Country: The body of Aidan Heartfield, a 22-year-old resident of Austin, was recovered late Friday afternoon after an exhaustive week-long search in the aftermath of last weekend’s devastating flood in the Texas Hill Country. Authorities confirmed Heartfield was located near the banks of the Guadalupe River, bringing closure to a search effort that drew regional and national attention.
Flooding Ravages Central Texas
Severe storms struck Central Texas on July 4, causing rapid river swelling and flash floods across Gillespie, Kerr, and Kendall counties. The Texas Hill Country region experienced rainfall totals exceeding 10 inches in some areas, leading to widespread evacuations, road closures, and extensive property damage.
Heartfield was reported missing on July 5 after his vehicle was found abandoned near a low-water crossing south of Comfort, Texas. According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, he was last seen attempting to navigate rising waters while returning from a holiday weekend camping trip with friends.
Search and Recovery Efforts
Local, state, and federal rescue teams, including Texas Search and Rescue (TEXSAR) and the Texas Department of Public Safety, coordinated daily ground, aerial, and water-based searches. Volunteers from the community joined efforts, combing riverbanks and wooded areas under challenging conditions marked by unstable terrain and receding floodwaters.
Kendall County Sheriff Alton Reed stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to the Heartfield family. The community’s response and the dedication of rescue teams were extraordinary.”
Flood Impact and Ongoing Recovery
The Fourth of July flooding is among the most severe to hit the Texas Hill Country in over a decade. Officials report three confirmed fatalities, including Heartfield, and dozens of rescues. Damage assessments are ongoing, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on site to assist displaced families and coordinate relief efforts.
- Over 200 homes damaged or destroyed
- Multiple highways remain closed for repairs
- Boil water notices are in effect in several communities
State officials urge residents to remain alert for further weather advisories as additional storms are forecast for the region this weekend.
Support for the Heartfield Family
A memorial fund has been established to support the Heartfield family and raise awareness about flood safety. Community members have organized vigils in Austin and Comfort, reflecting the outpouring of support throughout Central Texas.
Authorities remind the public never to attempt crossing flooded roadways and to heed all evacuation orders.
